The single sign-on that links Medicare, the ATO, Centrelink, My Health Record and more.
The keystone account. Almost everything government-related in Australia is reached through it. Set it up first and the rest of the list gets much shorter.
Have ready before you start
- An email address you will keep
- An Australian mobile number for security codes
Use your own permanent email and phone. Recovering a myGov account tied to a dead phone number is genuinely painful.

Usually done around the same time
- VEVO — check your visa conditions Free service that shows your visa status, expiry and exact conditions.
- Tax file number (TFN) Your personal tax identifier. Free, and applied for online once you are in Australia.
- Ambulance cover — check your state Ambulance is run and charged state by state, and it is not covered by Medicare in most of the country.
