A free app built by Australia’s emergency services. It uses your phone’s GPS to help you tell Triple Zero exactly where you are.
On a bush track, a beach or in a suburb you do not know, you may not be able to give an address. The app shows your location, and you can place the 000 call from inside it.

Underpayment of new arrivals is widespread and illegal. Check your rate in your first week, not when you leave.
Everyone working in Australia has the same rights regardless of visa status. The Ombudsman has an explicit assurance protocol so that reporting underpayment does not put your visa at risk.
Cash in hand with no payslip is a red flag. You must get a payslip within one working day of being paid. No payslip means no proof — and for working holiday makers, no evidence for a second-year visa.
Share housing is how most new arrivals start. Inspect in person, meet the housemates, and never transfer money for a room you have not seen.
Rental scams targeting new arrivals are common and follow a pattern: a great price, an owner who is "overseas", and pressure to pay a deposit sight unseen. Never do it.

Do now Out of the water. Pour vinegar on the sting for 30 seconds. Start CPR if they are not breathing.
112 from a mobile · 106 text relay (deaf or speech impaired) · free interpreter: say your language · stay on the line.
Dangerous, and in the tropical north only (see the map). The stinger season typically runs November to May, but stingers can be in the water all year in tropical Queensland. A severe box jellyfish sting can stop a person breathing and cause cardiac arrest. Irukandji are small and usually not seen. Their sting is minor at first, then severe pain, vomiting and sweating can start 5 to 40 minutes later.
In stinger season, swim only at a patrolled beach under the guidance of lifesavers.
Stinger nets help against box jellyfish but are not reliably effective against Irukandji.
If stung: get the person out of the water, call 000, pour vinegar over the sting for at least 30 seconds, and start CPR if they are not breathing.
For any tropical jellyfish sting, keep the person out of the water and watched for 45 minutes.
Do now Stay well back from the water. Never swim where crocodiles might live.

Found in rivers and swamps across the north, and sometimes on beaches. Adult males can grow to 5.5 metres, swim at about 32 km/h and run short distances on land.

Do now Swim between the red and yellow flags. Leave the water if a siren sounds.
112 from a mobile · 106 text relay (deaf or speech impaired) · free interpreter: say your language · stay on the line.
Attacks are very rare, and the safest part of the beach is between the red and yellow flags, where lifeguards keep a lookout. If they see a shark they sound a siren or ring a bell and tell you to leave the water straight away.
Don’t swim after dusk, at night, or before dawn.
Don’t swim alone, or while bleeding.
Avoid murky water, estuary mouths, canals, and places with schools of fish.
Do now Wear a lifejacket to rock fish. Never swim after drinking.
Rock fishing is one of the most dangerous hobbies in Australia, and a disproportionate number of people die doing it.
Before you fish from rocks, watch the waves and swell, check for slippery rock, tell someone where you are going, and wear a lifejacket. A lifejacket is compulsory in declared areas of NSW.
Never swim after drinking alcohol or taking drugs.
Slip on a shirt, slop on SPF 50+ sunscreen, slap on a hat, seek shade, slide on sunglasses.
Do now Keep them still. Bandage the whole limb firmly, from the fingers or toes upward.
112 from a mobile · 106 text relay (deaf or speech impaired) · free interpreter: say your language · stay on the line.
Pressure bandaging and immobilising the limb slows venom. It is recommended for snakes (including sea snakes), funnel-web and mouse spiders, blue-ringed octopus and cone shells. It is not recommended for other bites and stings.
Call 000 and ask for an ambulance. Lie the person down, keep them still and calm.
Remove jewellery from the limb if you can.
Put a broad pressure bandage over the bite. Then wrap a firm elastic bandage, 10 to 15 cm wide, from just above the fingers or toes up the whole limb. It should be firm, not so tight that it causes numbness, tingling or colour change.
Splint the limb so it cannot move. Mark the bite site with an X on the bandage.
Do not make the person walk. Bring the ambulance as close as you can.
Do now No tourniquet, no cutting, no sucking out venom, no alcohol.
A tight tourniquet used to be advised, but it no longer is. Do not tourniquet or cut a bite, do not try to suck out the venom, and do not give the person alcohol.
If the person collapses or stops breathing, you may need CPR until the ambulance arrives.
Do now Give an adrenaline injector if there is one. Lay them flat, or let them sit if breathing is hard.
112 from a mobile · 106 text relay (deaf or speech impaired) · free interpreter: say your language · stay on the line.
Anaphylaxis is a life-threatening allergic reaction, and it usually starts within 20 minutes of the bite or sting. Steps, in order:
Call 000 first, or have someone else call while you act.
Give an adrenaline injector if one is there, the person’s own or one from a first aid kit. Follow the instructions on the device.
Lay the person flat and do not let them stand or walk. If breathing is difficult, let them sit.
If there is no improvement after 5 minutes, give a second dose if you have another injector.
If they become unresponsive and are not breathing normally, start CPR.
Signs: difficult or noisy breathing, a swollen tongue, throat tightness, trouble speaking or a hoarse voice, persistent dizziness or collapse. In babies and young children: pale and floppy, or not responding.
Do now Ring for advice. If they are collapsing or struggling to breathe, call 000 instead.
Poisons Information Centre: 24 hours a day, seven days a week.If the person is collapsing or struggling to breathe, call 000 instead.

Do now Do not go near it. Keep people and pets away, and call a snake catcher in your area.
Snakes are generally shy and will not attack unless provoked. Most bites happen when someone tries to catch or kill one, so leave it to a professional.
Keep people and pets away. If you can do it safely, shut the snake in one room.
Keep track of where it is. Its size, and the date and time you saw it, help the catcher. A photo helps identify it, if you can take one safely.
Call a professional snake catcher in your area. In the Northern Territory the number is 1800 453 210. Elsewhere, search for a catcher near you.
Never try to catch, kill or touch it.
If anyone is bitten, call 000 and use the bandage steps.
Do now Keep them still. Bandage the limb firmly. Do not try to catch the spider.
112 from a mobile · 106 text relay (deaf or speech impaired) · free interpreter: say your language · stay on the line.
Funnel-webs live along eastern Australia from northern Queensland to Tasmania and in parts of South Australia. Mouse spiders are found all over the country. First aid is a pressure bandage and keeping the person still, and an ambulance.
The male Sydney funnel-web is considered Australia’s most dangerous spider. It is not found in Victoria.
Treat a bite from a large, dark spider as dangerous, especially around Sydney, the Blue Mountains, the NSW highlands and south coast, or south-east Queensland.
Do not try to catch the spider. A photo on a phone is fine, but do not let it delay the bandage.
Since antivenom was introduced there have been no recorded deaths from a confirmed spider bite.
Do now Wash it, then a cold pack for 15 minutes. No pressure bandage. Go to hospital if they are unwell.
Redbacks are common and turn up in backyards, sheds and under stairs. Only the female bite is dangerous, and most bites happen when someone puts a hand in the web. Wash the bite with soap and water, then put a cold pack on it for 15 minutes, longer if the pain continues. Seek medical help.
The pain of most other spider bites can be managed with a cold pack.
A redback bite is rarely serious for an adult, but it can threaten the life of a young child. Go to hospital if the person is unwell.
Never cut a spider bite or put a tourniquet on a limb.
Do now Do not pull it off. Freeze it with a pharmacy tick spray.
Do not pull a tick off or use tweezers. Freeze and kill it with an ether-containing spray from a pharmacy, and let it drop off or brush the dead tick away. If you cannot, leave it and see a doctor.
Do not use methylated spirits, alcohol, kerosene or a flame on a tick. Disturbing it can make it release more toxin or allergen.
Do not use the freezing spray on a tick close to the eyes, the genitals or inside the ear canal. See a doctor instead.
Tick paralysis is rare in people, because the tick must stay attached for several days.
If you are allergic to ticks, get urgent medical help to have it removed in a hospital emergency department. For breathing trouble or collapse, use your adrenaline injector and call 000.
See a doctor for a rash or swelling, fever, feeling weak or unsteady, double vision, or trouble breathing or swallowing.
Do now Scrape the sting out. If breathing is hard or the tongue swells, call 000 and follow the allergic reaction steps.
For a bee sting, scrape the sting out with a fingernail rather than pulling it. Wash the area and use a cold pack. Wasps do not leave a sting behind, and they can sting more than once.
Ant stings, like bee and wasp stings, carry a high risk of a severe allergic reaction.
Go to hospital if someone is stung in the mouth, or stung many times in one incident: more than 10 times for an adult, more than 5 for a child.
Do now Do not touch it. If bitten or scratched, clean the wound and see a doctor straight away.
Any bat in Australia could carry Australian bat lyssavirus, whatever it looks like. Do not touch or try to rescue a bat that is injured or in distress. Call your local wildlife rescue group.
Bites and scratches spread the virus. After a bite or scratch, rapid and thorough cleaning of the wound and getting medical advice straight away helps prevent infection. There is no cure once it develops.
Droppings, urine or blood, and walking near a roost, are not a risk if you do not handle bats.
Do now Keep them still. Bandage the limb. Start CPR if they stop breathing.
112 from a mobile · 106 text relay (deaf or speech impaired) · free interpreter: say your language · stay on the line.
Blue-ringed octopuses are not aggressive, but the bite is venomous and can cause paralysis. Cone shells live in reef waters. For both, call 000, lie the person down and keep them still, and apply a pressure bandage and splint.
Blue-ringed octopus: numbness around the mouth, tongue, face and neck, and a tight chest or trouble breathing. You may need to start CPR, and keep going until help arrives.
Cone shell: pain, swelling and numbness at the sting, then weak muscles, including the breathing muscles, and disturbed vision, speech and hearing.
Do now Hot water for 20 minutes, as hot as they can comfortably stand.
Use hot water for stings from bluebottles, non-tropical jellyfish, stinging fish (stonefish, lionfish, bullrout), stingrays, crown-of-thorns starfish and sea urchins. Make the water as hot as the person can comfortably stand, and soak the area for 20 minutes. Do not burn them.
Lift the area out of the water briefly before putting it back. If the pain continues, carry on.
Do not use vinegar on a bluebottle. Go to hospital quickly if symptoms are severe.
Only Australian citizens, permanent residents and New Zealand citizens on a Special Category (444) visa have no conditions on working. Other visas, such as Student and Working Holiday Maker, carry conditions on the work you can do and the hours.
A Visitor visa or ETA does not allow you to work. Working on one is illegal.
VEVO shows your exact conditions, and lets you send proof of them to an employer.
You can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session, and unlimited hours during scheduled course breaks. You cannot work before your course starts unless another visa allowed it.
Conditions can vary. Confirm yours in VEVO or on your visa grant letter before you start or change jobs.
Visa condition 8547 limits how long you can work for one employer to six months, unless an exemption applies or Home Affairs gives permission. It covers any work: full time, part time, casual, shift or voluntary.
Since 1 January 2024 the exemptions include plant and animal cultivation anywhere in Australia, and the same employer at different locations, as long as work in any one location stays under six months.
A tax file number (TFN) is your tax ID. It is free to apply for on the ATO website, and there is a separate application path for permanent migrants and temporary visitors with a valid work-rights visa.

What you need depends on the occupation. Some occupations need registration, licensing or professional membership before you can start working, and the law can require it. In every occupation the employer decides who to hire.
For a regulated occupation, ask the registration, licensing or professional authority for that job.

Every employee is entitled to a minimum wage, and the Fair Work Pay Calculator finds the right one for your job. Employers must give you a pay slip within one working day of pay day.
New employees must get the Fair Work Information Statement before, or as soon as possible after, they start. New casuals also get the Casual Employment Information Statement.
An unpaid trial is only lawful to show you can do the skills the job needs, and under direct supervision. That can range from about an hour to one shift. Anything beyond what is reasonably needed must be paid at least the minimum rate.
An employer who wants to assess you for longer could employ you as a casual or on probation, and pay you for every hour.
Contractors generally set their own fees, use their own equipment, choose their hours and can work for more than one client. Describing an employee as a contractor to avoid paying legal minimums is called sham contracting, and it is against the law unless the employer can prove they reasonably believed the person was a contractor.

Police use roadside saliva tests for drugs, including cannabis, in every state and territory.

Cannabis and other illegal drugs are criminal offences in most places. Do not carry them.

Nicotine vapes are regulated as medicines, and nicotine pouches can no longer be bought or brought in at all.
Nicotine vapes can only be supplied through an Australian pharmacy, for quitting smoking or managing nicotine dependence. Check the TGA for who can supply what.
You cannot order vapes from overseas, and bringing them in is tightly limited. Check the TGA before you pack them.
From 24 July 2026 there is no lawful way for consumers to buy or import nicotine pouches, unless a product is entered on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods. None was on 24 July 2026. Travellers cannot bring them in, and Border Force seizes them.
Many motorways have no toll booths. The toll is billed to the car’s registered owner, which for a hire car is the rental company, and it will pass the cost on to you with its own fees.

If you do not declare it, you can get an infringement notice or be prosecuted, and your visa can be cancelled.
If you are not sure, declare it, or leave it at home. Bins before immigration are there for things you decide not to bring in.
On a declared Total Fire Ban day you cannot light a fire in the open. Campfires and fires for warmth are banned.
Solid-fuel barbecues, pizza ovens and smokers are banned in the open air. Gas and electric barbecues are allowed in some states, with conditions.
Burning off, welding and grinding in the open are also banned. In Western Australia, so are fireworks.
Penalties are heavy, with fines in the tens of thousands of dollars and possible jail. Check the fire authority for your state before you light anything.
